The Tall CLT building workshop was held at January 2014 in Seattle, WA and sponsored by the NSF NEES program through the NEES Planning grant in order to identify the societal needs and engineering challenges for Tall CLT construction in seismic active regions of the U.S., especially the Pacific Northwest. The purpose of this document is to provide a brief report on the event and share the contact information for all participants who provided their information on the sign-in sheets.
A total of 62 Participants from local government and planning, design engineering and architect offices, timber industry, and higher education institutions participated in the workshop discussion.

Workshop White Paper
A document summarizing the discussion topics from the workshop in detail. It also contains proposed roadmap for enabling tall CLT construction by 2020.
Workshop Presentations:
Introducing the research team, research plan, and vision of the NEES-CLT project, purpose and organization of the workshop.
2. Tall Wood Buildings for the Pacific Northwest. (Lead to Breakout Session A)
Introduction to the potential benefit of CLT construction to Pacific Northwest region, cost competitiveness of the system, and the case for resiliency.
Up-to-date presentation on the development of CLT related research, implementation, and codified efforts in Canada, with a special section on fire performance of the system.
4. Performance expectation and codified efforts in the U.S. (Lead to Breakout Session B)
In this presentation some recent and upcoming testing of CLT in the U.S. will be highlighted. Then, draft performance expectations for tall CLT buildings will be presented with the intent that these are modified during the breakout sessions. Finally, an on-going project to develop seismic performance factors (R-Factor) for CLT inclusion in ASCE7 will be explained.
5. Building with CLT: New Zealand (and Australian) Experience
The presentation will provide a brief history of CLT in the region, past and present initiatives and projects, advanced structural systems based on CLT, and Christchurch rebuild prospects related to CLT.
6. Seismic resilient system concepts (Lead to Breakout Session C)
This presentation will present earthquake resilient structural systems that have been successfully implemented in other materials (steel and concrete) and discuss the potential of porting these concepts to CLT. The discussion will focus on tall building systems under seismic loading, and leads to further discussion in the breakout sessions.
